Intended SOS

© Copyright 2012, Paul Kislanko

There are a gazillion (slang for "countably infinite") number of ways to define schedule strength. Most of them are ad-hoc inventions whose only value is to win a bar bet, but "SOS" however defined is a necessary consideration when winning percentage doesn't include games against every possible opponent.

For D1 baseball Boyd Nation introduced the notion of an "intended SOS" based upon how teams use their discretionary (non-conference) scheduling opportunities to improve (or not) their overall schedule.

It's harder to define an "intended" SOS in FBS because there are not enough non-conference games (even if they are against good teams) to offset a conference schedule that doesn't involve top teams. Conversely, even the worst imaginable non-conference schedule can lead to an overall schedule strength in the top quartile for a team in a "big six" conference.

By "Big 6" I mean "the conferences formerly referred to as BCS Automatic Qualifiers", and you'll still find "FBS_AQ" as a designation for those on this site. This article will partially explain why it is still meaningful to separate the FBS into subcategories, as will Interdivsional results (where FBS_AQ is designated as "BCS") when the 2012 version is complete.
I have a finite but large number of ways to calculate SOS based upon games-played, but before any games have been played there's not much to go on except how a team's opponents were ranked last year. The very notion of "intended" SOS is harder to pin down in football - the "scheduling horizon" is usually 7 or 8 years out. It almost makes sense in baseball because most non-conference games are scheduled for at most two seasons out.

The ones I'm about to describe are not ones I'd use to evaluate a team's SOS at the end of the season. Actually, I don't think I'd use 'em for any purpose except to illustrate the different scheduling philosophies implemented by teams depending upon which FBS sub-category they are in.

The 2011 team rankings are the 60th-best from the 120 computer rankings that Kenneth Massey had consolidated by 7 February 2012. Here are the 25 toughest schedules, with opponents' rank listed in chronological order:

If you noticed that all the teams in the top 25 overall SOS are from one of the "BCS" conferences ("big 6" plus Notre Dame) you are starting to get a feel for how hard it is for a non-Big 6 conference team to overcome the effect of its conference schedule on its overall SOS.

Here are the 25 toughest non-conference schedules (opponents ranks listed by best-to-worst rank):

To demonstrate the impact of scheduling for the non-Big 6 conferences, I dropped the six worst opponents' ranks from the caclulation. There's still only one non-Big 6 team in the resulting top 25, only because three of SMU's top six opponents are top-25 non-conference teams. Few of the 24 Big-6 teams have even one non-conference opponent amongst their six toughest games.
